Bastar region in Chhattisgarh is Tribal heartland of India. Bastar area is unlike any other in India. Jagdalpur, main town of Bastar does not sport many fancy hotels and is not on top of the list of travel destinations despite being around some wildlife reserves, most incredible waterfalls and stunning tribal craft heritage.
Jagdalpur is located 300 kms from Raipur the state capital. Jagdalpur connects to other Tribal areas of Orissa such as Koraput and attracts well heeled inbound travelers looking to get an insight into tribal heartland of India. For an India traveler Bastar is more about Chitrakote Waterfalls, Tribal craft and completely off-beat experiences.
Local markets can be interesting for craft enthusiast. Dalpat Sagar Lake is good for bird watching and boating. Bastar Palace and Museum is for heritage travelers. The major attractions for travelers here are number of waterfalls i.e. Chitradhara Waterfalls, Mandawa Waterfalls, Tirathgarh Falls and biggest of them all Chitrakote falls (Considered Niagra falls of India).
Bastar area is also heart of Naxal movement and therefore has not developed into a kind of tourist destination it ought to have been. However there are travelers who understand that local movements happen everywhere, arrive for a completely experiential and off-beat experience of Bastar.
