Amarnath Yatra is where Shiva devotees and Hindus is generate make a pilgrimage during Summer to Amarnath Cave for the Darshan of the only ice stalagmite Shiva Linga, which waxes during May to August and gradually wanes thereafter (Only to form again after winter next year).
The caves are situated at 3888 meters above asl and the shrine is said to be over 5,000 years old.
Chandanwari, 14 km from Pahalgam at an altitude of 3000 mts. is the base camp of Amarnath Yatra. The meandering trek of 14 kms from Chandanwari leads to the Holy Cave.
Guests have an option to trek from Chandanwari to Panchtarmi and then approach Amarnath Cave or take Helicopter rides to Panchtarmi and then take 6 km (2 hour) walk or pony ride to Amarnath Cave.
Guests stay at Pahalgam or Aru and approach Amarnath Yatra. Those who take the trekking option stay at Pachtarmi whereas others return by Helicopter.
Note: Prior Health Checkup mandatory for Amarnath Yatra. Helicopter booking starts well in advance and therefore prior planning is must for Amarnath Yatra
Amarnath Yatra is one of the must do pilgrimages for Lord Shiva devotees specifically and Hindus in general and can be an excellent trekking option for travellers looking to experience ultimate Himalayan character of Kashmir.
