Ex-Mumbai Train Getaways in Maharashtra

 

Following destinations are accessible from Mumbai by a train for a getaway.

Chikaldhara is a hill station at 100 kms from Badnera station (Mumbai - Nagpur Route). Badnera has convenient overnight trains from Mumbai. [ Resorts in Chikaldhara ]

Aurangabad is accessible from Mumbai by overnight trains and is a heritage destination, which is a base point to viist Ajanta / Ellora Caves, Grineshwar Jyotirlinga temple and Lonar Crater. For details on Aurangabad as a getaway click here

Matheran is a hill station at 100 kms from Mumbai, accessible via convenient local suburban trains to Neral (Mumbai CST - Karjat line via Kalyan). From Neral its a 11 km uphill hike (very popular option for students over weekend) or a share a taxi cab ride till Dasturi Point (Vehicles are allowed till Dasturi Point only and from here guests take a horse ride, Hand rickshaw or walk about 3 kms to Matheran town centre ). From Neral station one cal also take the famous heritage train which is the only option that takes guests straight to the Matheran town centre. This train was stopped after 2006 monsoon land slides around the area but have now reportedly been restarted since October 2007.  [Matheran Hotels].

Karjat (Mumbai CST - Karjat line via Kalyan) itself is a base point to visit a few getaway resorts in the area. On the Harbour line (Mumbai CST - Vashi - Panvel Route), Panvel is a good base point to visit weekend resorts in Karnala area which are accessible from Panvel station by a local rickshaw transport. Just ahead of Karjat on the Mumbai-Pune route are the twin hill stations of Khandala and Lonavala which come alive during monsoon with waterfalls about around the hills and weather turns misty. Its a very popular day visit option during monsoon on Sundays and a major regional conference centre all round the year. It is also popular for corporate getaways in monsoon and winters. Dapoli/Harnai, Chiplun, Ratnagiri/Ganapatipule, Malvan and Sawantwadi on coastal Maharashtra are accessible by Konkan Rail network.  Dapoli (Accessed from Khed) and Chiplun are recommended for 1 night / 2 days trip on account of convenient train connectivity. Ratnagiri / Ganapatipule, Malvan and Sawantwadi are farther and therefore recommended for a 2 night / 3 days trip.
