Following destinations are accessible from Mumbai by a train for a getaway.

Ahmedabad (550 kms from Mumbai) is accessible from Mumbai via a convenient set of overnight trains and day train (Shatabdi Express). Ahmedabad itself can be made a base for a variety of getaways that are within 2 hours drive. 

Some of the getaways within these have trains directly going to another nearby station which further adds to the convenience (e.g. Balaram Palace, Palampur, Viramgam (for Rann Riders Dasada)).

Ahmedabad itself is recommended for staying at House of MG, a charming heritage option with restaurants famous for authentic Gujarati Snacks and Meals and one that promotes a lot of heritage walks within the old-city that would interest anyone interested in culture and heritage. 

Ahmedabad being part of Gujarat, which is under prohibition act banning all categories of liquor consumption, effectively means that Ahmedabad has no discos / nightlife and therefore is not something that could be recommended a city break. However Ahmedabad can still be visited for shopping antiques, handicrafts and products based upon that. 

Closer to Mumbai (<200 kms), Vapi is a convenient base point for accessing Union Territories of Daman and Dadra & Nagar Haveli (Silvassa, Dadara , Khanvel). Vapi has a direct access from Mumbai via Shatabdi Express that leaves early morning and returns in the evening.
