Chilka Lake
Nestling in the heart of coastal Orissa, Chilka is India's biggest inland lake.
Speared over 1,100 square kilometers, it runs along the border of three
districts of Puri, khurda and Ganjam and finally joins the bay of Bengal through
the narrow mouth, forming an enormous lagoon of brackish water.
Dotted with many emerald green island with colorful names such as honeymoon island and breakfast island, Chilika is home to a reach variety of aquatic fauna. It is also a sanctuary and winter resort for migratory birds, some coming from as far as Siberia.
Containing a large variety of fish the lake provide livelihood to thousands of fishermen. Hundreds of boats sailing out on the lakes blue expanse in search of mackerel, prawn and crabs- the sight providing an inside into the pageant to the rural India as it is the colorful best.
Encircled by hills all along its arched shapes shores Chilika lake's color changes with passing clouds and the shifting sun. The water ripples languidly, occasionally dancing with the gentle breeze from across the bay of Bengal.
Nirmala jhar :
A place of religious worship as well as a picnic spot of great interest.
Narayani :
By the side of a perennial stream, the shrine of goddess narayani adorns the
place. It is also an ideal for pleasure and relaxation.
Banpur :
A center of religious activities revolving round and time-honored shrines of
goddess bhagabati and dakshya-prajapati.
SHRI JAGANNATH TEMPLE
The main temple, a majestic structure of 65 meters high, stands on an
elevated platform in the heart of the city-its swirling pinnacle commanding the
landscape for miles around.
It is a monument of the 12th century A.D. with all the richness and plasticity of the Kalinga style of architecture. Apart from the main temple one can see within its precincts a host of other smaller temples including Goddess Vimala,Laxmi and Vishnu and Ananda Bazar,the biggest food market of the world. Entry is restricted to Hindus only.
The other notable shrines like Gundicha, Loknath,Sunar Gaurang, siddha Bakul, Ginarabant, Chakratirtha and tanks like Narendar, Swetaganga, Markandeya, Indradyumna, etc. are worth visiting
