Coonoor - Coonoor
(4500-5500 ft) at 20 kms from Ooty is more of a tea plantation town and
visited for its "off beat" and relaxed nature.
Emerald (7200 ft)
is another point 20 kms from Ooty which is known for its thick forest cover
and located bordering the famed "Silent Valley" of Kerala &
"Mukurthi National Park" (reserve for the endangered Nilgiri Thar)
Kotagiri is one of
the smaller plantation towns in the Nilgiri hills and remains relatively
unknown to outsiders.
Metupalaiyam (1000
ft) is base point for the heritage train and known for few plantations and
Blue Thunder Resort.
Basic idea of a
stay here is to be away from Ooty and its touristy feel. Some of the homely
stays / farms offer activities such as Horse Riding, Rock Climbing, River
Crossing, Fishing (Carp and Trout), Open Jeep Rides etc.
Typical Stay
- 2 - 3 nights
Seasonality
- Oct- May. Kotagiri lies in the shadow region and therefore enjoys the best
weather and least rainfall and thus enjoyable even in monsoon.
Access
- 55-75
kms from
Coimbatore. Coimbatore is the best arrival point
for the area (Good Train / flight connectivity with most major cities
in India).
