Udaipur is the Lake city of Rajasthan. City revolves around its three lakes. Lake Pichola, Fatehsagar and Swaroopsagar. Lake Pichola is the biggest and most famous for having the famous Lake Palace in the middle which is considered as one of the most Romantic experience in the world. A stay around Lake Pichola is considered an experience and is known for Grand Palaces, heritage havelis, high end retreats and heritage type stays.

There are number of places that one can visit keeping Udaipur as a base such as Shrinathji (Krishna Temple) at Nathdwara, Ranakpur (Jain Temples), Kumbhalgarh (Fort and Wildlife), Chittorgarh (Fort), Jaisamand (Lake, Birding).

Access : Udaipur gets flights from Delhi and Mumbai (besides Jaipur and Jodhpur) and can also be accessed via Ahmedabad (250 kms). Earlier Udaipur used to get trains only from local destinations in Rajasthan (such as Swai Madhopur / Jaipur ) and Ahmedabad. Udaipur now gets overnight trains from Mumbai as well. 

Types and Locations for accommodation options in Udaipur

Lake Pichola - Lake Pichola is one of the most preferred places for stay in Udaipur for overseas (Inbound) guests, narrow crowded streets around notwithstanding. Considering the extremely crowded character of the area, open areas and feeling of space is missing in almost all hotels here except the high end options. Around the Lake there are several mid-segment stays that are heritage haveli type in nature overlooking the lake and lake palace which are popular. Car access to a lot of hotels is a problem considering the narrow street.   

Fatehsagar Lake - This is the new destination for all high end hotels coming up. The USP of this location is the access. Guests are able go in and out of the hotel easily without having to face "Lake Pichola" type inconveniences. Buses can be parked easily and there is hardly ever any traffic Jam around here. 

Swaroop Sagar Lake - Swaroop Sagar is certainly smaller of the lakes and least known and is more of a quiet extension of the Fatehsagar lake. 

City Centre - Mainly business hotel and recommended for transit stays or corporate stays.

Around City Centre - There are number of options just a few kilometers from City centres for a more relaxed and less crowded stay.  Here the resorts have more space and open areas and are recommended for corporate off-sites, destination weddings and inbound groups. 

Rajputana Resorts is a large spreadout resort 2 kms from the highway with excellent conference hall. Udai Bagh is situated at about 7-8 kms from city centre and has an excellent spreadout character. 

Fatehgarh is a heritage castle type stay situated on the mountains 10 kms from town centre with distant view of the lake and areas around and open layout. This has been popular with reality shows and destination weddings. 

Activity centric getaway options - These are getaway experiences for guests who want little of crowd, more of space and visit udaipur to experience nature, activities and the authentic Rajasthani experiences rather than undertake touristy sightseeing. Shikarbadi Hotel is a hunting lodge and a royal ranch and now a charming getaway just off Ahmedabad highway. Just a few kilometers behind the lakes, Royal Retreat is one of the best resorts with a lot of antique furniture and a spread out layout overlooking the hills beyond. Jagat Retreat is a popular getaway retreat around the same area as Royal retreat and focuses on activities and experiences of exploring area around.
