Variations
/ Off the Beaten Track
-
An
activity oriented rural retreat near Jodhpur like Rohetgarh
or Chanwa Luni can be opted for an experience
oriented (Village Visits, Horse Safari, Jeep Rides), off-beat itinerary -
Manvar,
a Desert camp somewhat mid-way (115 kms) on Jodhpur-Jaisalmer route can be considered instead of
1 night at Sam. Manvar is more private desert retreat than ones at Sam and provides
a more exclusive desert experience than a more touristy Sam. -
For a rural fort /
retreat experience Fort Pokhran enroute
is recommended. This is also closer to the Ramdevra Temple (12 kms). -
Birding
Enthusiasts may choose to stay at Sodakore at Mirvana
Nature Resort near Jaisalmer (55 kms)
-
If
idea is to enjoy desert experience but not travel as much then Camel
Camp Osiyan (60 kms) Or Khimsar Sand Dunes Resort
(90 kms) are good alternative to Jaisalmer providing a more private desert experience like
Manvar. Extensions
-
Bikaner
(325 kms from Jaisalmer) can be considered as an extension. Bikaner is known for
Forts and Palaces, Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary and Deshnoke Temple. Bikaner
is connected by Train with Jodhpur, Ahmedabad (Overnight), Jaipur(Overnight) and
Mumbai(Overnight). -
For
bird watching enthusiasts, Kheechan is an excellent spot for migratory birds
in Winter and could be visited while keeping a base either in simpler Lal
Niwas Phalodi or more experiential Barsingha
Villa Bhap. From here guests may choose to come back to Jodhpur or
proceed further to Bikaner.
