Pilgrimage Destinations in Madhya Pradesh

In Khajuraho :

  • Kandariya Mahadeo Temple - a 31 mt high temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva enshrines a lingam (a phallic symbol, a symbol of energy, fertility and potency).

  • Chaunsat Yogini - this 10th century temples dedicated to Goddess Durga and are supposedly connected to the Gond Queen Durgavati's palace through an underground passage.

  • Chitragupta Temple - believed to have been built in the 11th century is dedicated to Hindu deity Surya (Sun).

  • Vishwanatha Temple - enshrines a three headed image of Lord Brahma and a 6-ft high Nandi Bull.

  • Matengeshwara Temple - is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has an eight feet high lingam.

  • Parsvanath Temple - was initially dedicated to Adinath but the statue was replaced by that of Parsavanath in 1860 A.D.

  • Gantai Temple - has a band which depicts the 16 dreams of Mahavira's mother and a Jain goddess on a winged Garuda.

  • Adinath Temple - is dedicated to Jain Saint Adinath and is embellished with sculpted figures, including Yakshis.

  • Duladeo Temple - was constructed in 1130 AD and is famous for the erotic carvings of Shiva and his consort Parvati.

In Bhopal :

  • Laxmi Narayan Temple - built over six years (1933-39) this temple is dedicated to Laxmi (goddess of wealth) and Narayana (the preserver).

In Ujjain :

  • Mahakaleshwar Temple - houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India and is believed to be Swayambhu (naturally originated).

  • Harsiddhi Temple - houses Goddess Mahalaxmi and Mahasaraswati. According to the Shiva Purana, when Shiva carried away the burning body of Sati from sacrificial fire, her elbow dropped at this place.

  • Chintaman Ganesh Temple - The Ganesh idol enshrined here is supposed to be Swayambhu-naturally originated.

  • Gadhkalika Temple - the deity in this temple is believed to have been worshipped by Kalidasa.

  • Managalnath Temple - is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is regarded as the birth place of planet Mars. In the ancient times, it was famous for a clear view of the planet, and hence the suitability for astronomical studies.

In Indore :

  • Omkareshwar Temple - situated on an island in river Narmada this temple has one of the 12 jyotirlinga in India.

In Chitrakoot :

  • It is said that Rama and Sita visited Chitrakoot during their 14-year long exile (Banvas) and spent 11 out of 14 years of exile in Chitrakoot.

    • Hanuman Dhara (water of spring tumbles over a Lord Hanuman idol)

    • Sati Anusuya

    • Kamadgiri

    • Janaki Kund (A tank where Sita Mata once bathed).

    • Sphatik Shila (where Ram and Sita used to sit).
