KAR/06l - Karnataka Plantation Country

Route - Chikmagalur (2 or 3 nights) - Malpe (2 nights)

Highlight - This is a classic short-break that covers plantation region of Chikmagalur (3000-3500 ft asl laidback and off-beat in character) and Malpe (A beach 70 kms from Mangalore and 10 kms from Udupi) Both Destinations are renowned ex-Bangalore getaways and therefore can be combined to make it into a relaxing / activity centric / Pilgrimage trip.

Chikmagalur (3000-3500 ft asl) - Coffee plantations and forests combine to give a feel that is a little different to Coorg. The area is less populated and plantations are larger, surrounded with hills, forests and river streams.

Trekking in the mountains, Walking through the Coffee Plantation, Bird Watching are popular activities here. Guests can visit Halebid and Belur temples that are well visited. Kemmanagundi hill station is also accessible from here.

Malpe - Watersports, Udupi Pilgrimage, Visiting St Marys Island, Backwater trip are some of the things to do in Malpe.

This itinerary has a distinct pilgrimage angle which can be explored.

  • Mangalore - Chikmagalur route - Dharmasthala is a renowned pilgrimage destination where Manjunatha Swamy temple is situated.

  • Chikmagalur - Malpe route - Sringeri Mutt, Horanadu Annapporneshwari Temple

  • While at Malpe - Udupi Krishna temple and other Temples at Udupi

  • Half Day Excursions from Malpe

  1. Jain pilgrimage centres of Karkala & Moodbidri. Annapoorneshwari temple at Hosanadu.

  2. Mookambika temple and Murudeswar temple.

Notes and Comments

  • Additional nights at Malpe may be considered for those interested covering all the above temples and more.

  • Subhramanya may be visited after Dharmasthala before moving onwards to Chikmagalur. However a stay at Sakleshpur is recommended in such a case instead of Chikmagalur.

  • For activity centric guests, additional stays in Chikmagalur may be added.

  • Wildlife / Eco-tourism element can be added easily by adding Bhadra to the above itinerary ideally between Chikmagalur and Malpe stays.

  • Rainforest element can be added easily by adding Kalasa to the above itinerary ideally between Chikmagalur and Malpe stays.

Best Season to Visit - Winter (Oct - March) is best time for Malpe and rest of Coastal Karnataka. Monsoon (June - Sept) is the lean season where its very green all over (even though humid in plains).

Accommodation Options - Chikmagalur Region - Malpe
