Sport, culture and tradition at Jai Mahal Palace

There's never a boring moment at the Jai Mahal Palace. Feel like a Maharajah as you learn the art of Safa (turban) tying. On the other hand, there are colourful, traditional dances like the Kachi Ghodi or Bhawai dance, which are performed daily for your enjoyment. Feel like a little shopping? Explore a special handicrafts bazaar - Meena Bazaar. If you fancy a bit of excitement, you could watch an Elephant Polo Match! And the kids can have a gala time feeding peacocks!

Safa Tying
Safa Tying is the art of transforming a 5-metre long sash of cotton or silk into a majestic turban. In Rajasthan, the colourful "Bhandej" (tie & die) print is the most popular Safa. A Safa has traditionally been worn to protect the head against heat and rain The Safa can be tied in different ways and the style in which the turban is wound and worn, identifies the region of Rajasthan from which the wearer hails.

Kachi Ghodi
This is an entertaining, ethnic folk dance performed by a man wearing a dummy horse shape, while musicians keep the beat with local folk instruments. The dance is usually performed during Indian weddings, folk events as part of a traditional welcome.

Bhawai Dance
This dance exemplifies the dexterity of folk dancers and their ability to balance numerous objects while dancing. Originating in Gujarat, the Bhawai form of folk dance and theatre has a village belle balancing a minimum of seven vessels on her head. The dancer gyrates while balancing herself on two or four glass tumblers or a steel plate (thali).
