Palampur - Palampur
(3500 - 4000 ft asl) is a tea plantation retreat at 35 kms from Dharamsala (45
kms from Mcloedgunj) and is access point for visiting Kangra Temples (especially
Chamunda devi, Baijnath) and Hanggliding centre at Billing (30 kms).
Palampur sports great
Himalayan views and view of the tea plantations. Being lower in height
temperatures and weather is not very extreme and pleasant all through the year.
Sightseeing around
Palampur comprise visit to the plantations. There are number of monasteries in
the area that can be visited. Billing is a hang gliding a centre (May - June is
the best time to visit). Billing can be trekked upto as well and treks around
the area can be organised.
Andretta Potteries
(17kms), is a center for varied artistic activities. Pottery lessons could be
had here at cost. Kangra Fort and Museum (50 kms) can also be visited.
Baijnath (15 kms) and Chamunda
Devi (15 kms) are prominent Temples around the area. Picnics to different
spots around the area can be organised. Uttarala (30 kms) is where the Binwa
Power Project site is situated and there is a waterfall as well.
Palampur is an ideal
stop for guests on the Himachal Itinerary coming from Manali and looking visit
Dharamsala or Dalhousie or even Vaishnodevi.
Palampur enjoys a
better feel than now crowded Mcleodgunj and has quite a few activities as
compared to Dharamsala (also has plantation backdrop) and therefore Palampur can
easily replace Mcleodgunj / Dharamsala
stays.
