Village Retreats

These are destinations within India that are visited for its village feel and rural experiences and specifically to get away from urban luxuries and influences to get a feel of what is considered by many the "real" India.

Rajasthan - Rajasthan can be considered the capital of Rural Retreats. There are so many of them around, from an oasis like Manvar or Mirvana Resort to a Rawla like Narlai or Rohetgarh or forts like Khejrala or Jojawar or village retreats on outskirts of cities like Bishnoi Village / Jhalamand or Stopover points like Nimaj Palace and Chhatrasagar, all exhude a complete unique fervour and offer a very personalised and homely holiday away from the usual. Activities here can range from a Craft centre visit to a jeep ride around the area spotting wildlife to a cultural evening with typically rajasthani meal, all geared to soak the guest into an authentic rajasthani experience.

Testimonial - This is just to let you know that we had a wonderful trip. Jhalamand Garh and Bishnoi village were excellent in terms of property, ambience, food and service! Infact excellent isn't a strong enough word! We felt so at home there, like we were visiting friends.
Khejrala too was excellent, wonderful property and friendly service. - Tasneem Doctor and Family, Mumbai - November 2007

Gujarat - Gujarat has some interesting mix of Rural Retreats. There is a remote village retreat on Indo-Park Border like Sham-e-Sarhad, a lakeside retreat in Garha Safari Lodge, resort on the edge of little rann of kutch like Rann Riders, all are different in everyway and still an experience by itself.

Tamilnadu - Chettinadu region, South of Madurai in Tamilnadu is home to some very charming village homes that earlier belonged to the wealthy chettiar families (Such as Chettinadu Mansion, Visalam and The Bangala), a business community. Now these are transformed into homestays / heritage resorts to give an authentic culinary and stay experience. Chettinadu Cuisine, much like Malabar Cuisine in Kerala is an entire different set of spicy dishes that is loved by guests visiting Tamilnadu (Chettinad Meal restaurants are there in all major cities of Tamilnadu and in Pondicherry). Meals here are so original and authentic that groups travelling in Thanjavur - Madurai sector make a mandatory luncheon stopover.

Sterling Swamimalai is another unique Village retreat that has literally duplicated village ambience right within the resort and gives guests an authentic experience of a Tamil Brahmin home.

Cardamon House is a lakefront home at Dindigul that is a good example of rural tourism where the owner has trained local villagers to give a very personalised experience admist very beautiful natural surroundings.
