Journey of Ladakh via Kargil with Uley is a short break itinerary where guests undertake an adventurous journey on Srinagar - Leh route with overnight stays at Kargil and Uley visiting Mulbekh, Lamayuru monastery, Alchi monastery enroute. Upon arrival at Leh guests visit Nubra Valley (High altitude Oasis and Desert) and Pangong Lake (high altitude lake).

Detailed Itinerary

Day-1 Srinagar - Kargil via Sonamarg Early Departure from Srinagar, travel to Kargil (8200+ ft asl) via Srinagar - Leh Highway. Enroute visit Sonmarg (8500+ ft asl) and experience stunning close range Himalayan views. Reach Kargil via Zojilla pass & Drass region.

Day-2 Kargil - Alchi via Lamayuru  Proceed to Alchi. Enroute visit Mulbekh (known for its huge Buddha Statue) and Lamayuru monastery (10500 ft asl - The oldest monastery in Ladakh). Reach Alchi by evening.

Day-3 Alchi Sightseeing, Monastery visit. Return to Leh. Visits around Leh. Drive to Leh enroute visiting Basgo (the most impressive of Ladakhi citadels despite its ruined state), Likir monastery and Phyang monastery (6 kms before Leh) further admire the confluence of Indus – Zanskar Rivers and the effects of Magnetic Hill (Defiance of the law of gravity). Visit Gurudwara Patthar Sahib and Kali Mata temple and reach Leh. If time permits, go for an evening visit to Shanti Stupa.

Day-4 Leh to Pangong. Visit Shey - Thiksey - Hemis Monasteries enroute. Early departure from Leh to Pangong (14000 ft asl - 150 kms - 5 hours) via Changla Pass (third highest pass of the world). Enroute visit Shey monastery, Thiksey monastery, Hemis monastery and Sindhu Ghat. Experience lake views from the Camp.

Day-5 Pangong - Leh. Leh market visit for shopping Drive back to Leh (150 kms - 5 hrs). Enroute take a short halt at Changla Pass to enjoy a cup of hot steaming tea. If time permits, explore local Leh market for shopping.

Day-6 Leh - Nubra Valley. Visit Sumur and Hunder village and Diskit Monastery. Early departure to Nubra Valley (10000+ ft asl - popularly known as the valley of flowers.) (125 kms - 5 hrs) enroute visit Khardung-la-pass (the highest Motorable road in the world - 17582 ft asl). Post lunch you can explore the beautiful village of Sumur & Hunder with a visit to Diskit Monastery.

Day-7 Visit Sand Dunes. Bactrian Camel ride. Back to Leh. Visit high altitude cold desert and Sand Dunes to enjoy a Bactrian Camel ride (Double humped camel). Return to Leh (125 kms - 5 hrs). If time permits take a walk to the market.

Day-8 Departure Depart for onward journey.

Alchi :

  • Likir Monastery - Likir Monastery or Likir Gompa is a Buddhist monastery in Ladakh located approximately 52 kilometres from Leh off Kargil highway. It is a scenic place and is significant as it is the seat of the Ngari Rinpoche.

  • Lamayuru Monastery - Lamayuru is one of the largest and oldest gompas in Ladakh and visited enroute on the Leh - Srinagar route. It has a population of around 150 permanent monks resident.

Leh :

  • Shanti Stupa - Shanti Stupa is a Buddhist stupa on a hilltop near Leh built in 1991 by Japanese Buddhist Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura. The Shanti Stupa holds the relics of the Buddha at its base, enshrined by the 14th Dalai Lama himself. The stupa has become a tourist attraction not only due to its religious significance but also due to its location which provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

  • Kali Mata Temple - Kali Mata temple is a locally popular temple near Leh Airport dedicated to Goddess Kali.

  • Sindhu Bank - Sindhu Ghat is situated at 10 km up stream the Indus River from Leh near the Shey monastery. It is a peaceful river bank offering excellent views of the area around.

  • Shey Monastery - The Shey Monastery and the Shey Palace complex are located 15 kilometres south of Leh on the Leh-Manali road. Shey was the summer capital of Ladakh in the past

  • Phyang Monastery - Phyang Monastery is a Buddhist monastery 16 kms west of Leh. Phyang contains numerous sacred shrines inside the monastery, frescoes dating from the royal period, and a 900 year old museum which has an extensive collection of idols including a number of fine Kashmiri bronzes probably dating to the 14th century, thangkas, Chinese, Tibetan and Mongolian firearms and weapons

  • Thiksey Monastery - Thikse Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Yellow Hat sect at 19 kms and is noted for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet and is the largest gompa in central Ladakh. The monastery is located at an altitude of 11,800 ft asl and is a 12-storey complex and houses many items of Buddhist art such as stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings and swords.

  • Gurdwara Pathar Sahib - Gurdwara Pathar Sahib was constructed in 1517 to commemorate the visit to the Ladakh region of Guru Nanak Dev in the region. Gurdwara is located at about 25 kms from Leh, on the Leh-Kargil road, 12000 ft above sea level.

  • Khardungla Pass - Khardung La (17582 ft asl) is one of the worlds highest motorable passes at 39 kms from Leh. Khardung La offers spectacular views and is kind of must visit for any traveller to Leh.

  • Hemis Monastery - Hemis Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Drukpa Lineage, located at 45 kms from Ladakh. The monastery existed before 11th century and was re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi king. The annual Hemis festival honoring Padmasambhava is held here in early June.

Destination Overview

Srinagar - Srinagar is the summer capital city of Kashmir. Srinagar is a city famous for its lake experience. Houseboats, Shikaras and Mughal gardens, Handicraft shops all combine to give a unique holiday experience.

Kargil - Kargil (8200 ft asl) is one of the coldest regions in India on the Srinagar - Leh highway.

Alchi - At 70 kms from Leh, Alchi Choskor (10000 - 11000 ft) is situated on the banks of Indus River and home to an ancient monastery.

Leh - Leh lies at altitude of 10500 ft and the region basically is a high altitude desert and home to ancient monasteries, offers some extreme weather and exceptional views.

Pangong Lake - Pangong Lake (160 kms from Leh) is situated at about 14,200 feet and is the world’s highest saltwater lake.

Nubra Valley - Nubra Valley (120 kms from Leh) is known for being the high altitude desert area having sand dunes and the double humped camels.
