Saurashtra -
Introduction and Geography - Saurashtra is another name for North West
Gujarat. It is a large region which has a thriving local economy. Rajkot is
the geographical centre of the region and therefore draws its importance
from the fact that its almost equidistant from all corners of the
region. Jamnagar used to be a non-descript town in northern
Saurashtra, however development of Reliance and Essar Oil refineries just
outskirts of the city means that its now the fastest growing city in the
region. Bhavnagar draws its importance from being in close proximity to the
Alang Shipyard, India's flag bearer of the Ship breaking industry. Jamnagar
/ Rajkot - Accommodation, areas and its Character - Jamnagar and Rajkot has
mainly 2-star, 3-star business hotels suited for regional meets and
conferences. These cities do not have either the access or
accommodation / conference hall capabilities to hold a large conference or a
even a mid-size convention. Bhavnagar has a heritage hotel and a 2-star
Hotel and no other good accommodation to boast of. Sasan Gir (160 kms from
Rajkot) which is on
outskirts of Gir National Park known for its population of Asiatic Lions has
resort like option suited for a wildlife
centric corporate getaway.
Access :
Jamnagar has flights from Mumbai and Delhi. Rajkot and Bhavnagar has flights
only from Mumbai. Diu and Porbandar also has flights from Mumbai. Entire
Saurashtra region get overnight trains from Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Delhi and
Northern India has limited train connection with one or two trains.
Availability
Scenario: For Cities, Winter (Oct-March) is when NRI wedding season kicks off and
limited quality accommodation gets filled up. Due to limited quality
accommodation availability and limited individual hotel room capacity, its
advisable to plan reasonably in advance to ensure availabilities. For Gir,
Oct-March is the best time weather- wise (April-June is relatively hot).
From perspective of wildlife viewing park is open from October 1st to June
30th and can be visited anytime during this period.
Note: Please
note that Alcohol possession and consumption is generally prohibited in
Gujarat. Under a new relaxed policy for coprorate groups happening in
Gujarat, special one-time liquor consumption permits can be issued for
guests from outside of Gujarat participating in a conference / meet.
