Matheran -
Introduction and Geography - Matheran (2500 ft) is a premier hill
station in western India known for its Cold Climate in Winter, heavy monsoons and pleasant climate in
Summers. Its
accessible from Pune (130 kms) and Mumbai (110 kms). Its a unique throwback
to 19th century type of a destination where vehicles cannot get in and one
has to park them 3 kms from main town (Called "Dastoori Point")
and then either walk or take a horseback to town. Matheran is full of thick
wooded walks and excellent destination if one is prepared to walk around or
take a horseback. However this feature makes
it inconvenient from a perspective of a corporate group. Even then with
corporate profile becoming more adventure and youth centric, Matheran is
coming up as a corporate getaway destination. While
Matheran has a sizeable number of hotel visited for decades by traditional
tourists. However as corporate requirements have grown,
there are now number of resorts that cater to corporates all the time and
are geared to meet the requirements such as Usha
Ascot, Byke etc.
Availability
Scenario: Availability scenario is extreme. Summers, long weekends
and Holiday season gets booked well in advance. Rest of the time
weekends get booked well in advance. Therefore reservation and planning well
in advance is a must except perhaps during monsoon (Mid-June, Mid-September)
when availability isn't as much of a problem.
Access:
Local Suburban Trains (CST-Karjat/Khopoli Central line Route) stop at Neral
from where Dastoori Point is 8 kms away up the hill. Share a cab are
available at Neral on per seat basis to go to Dastoori. From Neral a
heritage train (Like Darjeeling, Ooty and Shimla) runs and which is the only
way to reach Matheran town centre direct.
